Flaine
Whilst it could never claim to be a pretty resort, purpose-built Flaine, set in a sunny bowl below Mont Blanc, has an excellent snow record, doorstep skiing genuinely suitable for all levels, is an easy drive from the Channel ports and only 45 miles from Geneva. It has superb nursery slopes with 4 free lifts and very good children's facilities. Of enormous attraction to intermediates are the links to the 3 traditional resorts of Samoens, Morillon and Les Carroz. Unusually for such a large linked circuit, there are plenty of steep runs and mogul fields, as well as exceptional off-piste opportunities (guide essential).
With one of the best funparks in the Alps and a designated kid's half-pipe, Flaine is popular, too, with freestylers. Choose from simple, budget accommodation to independent, Scandinavian style chalets. The Grand Massif pass covers Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoens and Sixt, all linked to Flaine by pistes or lifts.
